Pure Essential Oils Are Best

Nobody wants to purchase a bottle Coca-Cola only to open it and discover that it has been diluted with water, and the same is true of essential oils.

When you read the label, look for the terms “pure” or “100% pure” to help you understand what is in the bottle. Some companies will dilute the lavender essential oil with other ingredients to bring down the costs, and – subsequently – the quality drops, as well.

Choose Oils Stored in Dark Glass Bottles

Is the oil stored in a dark glass bottle? If so, this is a good sign.

Glass will not inhibit or affect the aromatic or therapeutic properties of an essential oil like plastic will, which is why it is imperative that they are stored in this material if you want to reap the full benefits.

Dark bottles – as in winemaking – help filter out sunlight that could potentially jeopardize the beneficial properties of the oil.

Plant Origin

Did you know that lavender is in the same plant family as mint? While the two have very distinct differences, they have enough similarities to be grouped in the same plant family: Lamiaceae. You will also find other common aromatic herbs such as thyme, oregano, rosemary, and basil in this family!

Plants all fall into different categories, starting with a “Kingdom” and going all the way down to a specific species.

  • Most essential oil companies will use the Lavandula Angustifolia (also known as Lavandula Officinalis) – Species in their oil, which is more commonly known as English Lavender. The flowers have a grayish tone when compared to those of the Dutch Lavender flower from the species Lavandula x Intermedia. The latter produces more of a bluish purple color.

So what’s the difference apart from the color?

Those who are extremely experienced with essential oils will detect their subtle differences, but if you’re new to oils and not interested in delving in too far, just know that either one is an excellent choice!

What does “Therapeutic Grade” mean?

The phrase “therapeutic grade” is of no value in the essential oil world. Companies print it on the label as a marketing strategy to help make their product sound more appealing, but since there is no system or “grade” system to distinguish oils, the phrase is honestly useless.

Now you know!

Should I Choose Organic Oil?

Organic – while an excellent certification – is not the only thing that defines the quality of the oil.

You really need to understand how the oil was extracted from the plant and how it was processed by the company to determine its level of quality.

The best lavender essential oil on the market is an organic one since you are sure that it will be free of pesticides and other harmful pollutants. Ideally, however, you should opt for one that has been steam distilled or expressed (a.k.a. cold pressed) since these methods do not rob the oil of its beneficial properties.

Top 3 Best Lavender Essential Oil Reviews

1. Sky Organics 100% Pure Lavender Essential Oil

Quantity: 1 fl. Ounce
Lavender Species: Lavandula Angustifolia

Sky Organics has a good reputation in the essential oil world, and it earned our top pick in the lavender essential oil category.

This oil is 100% organic (USDA certified by QCS) and does not contain any additives or chemicals. They use steam distillation to extract the oil, and the plants originate from France.

The company is also proudly cruelty-free, so if you’re a shopper who values a product that does not test on animals, this is the perfect oil for you!

2. NOW Foods 100% Pure Lavender Oil

Quantity: 2 fl. ounces
Lavender Species: Lavandula Officinalis (a.k.a. Lavandula Angustifolia)

NOW Food’s Lavender Oil is probably one of the most popular in its price range. The quality is excellent, and many enjoy the rich fragrance for aromatherapy.

While it is not an organic oil like the previous one, but it is non-GMO verified. It is steam distilled from the fresh, flowering tops of the lavender plants.

This particular bottle does not have a dropper included, which does make removing it from the bottle a bit of a hassle since it can flow out rather quickly from the orifice reducer (the special cover on the opening of the bottle). Be careful when removing it so you avoid wasting any oil!

It is slightly less expensive than Sky Organics (probably since it is not organic), but still an excellent oil. You get more product, too.

3. Mary Tylor Naturals Lavender Essential Oil

Quantity: 4 fl. ounces
Lavender Species: Lavandula Angustifolia

This is the largest bottle in our top three and one that comes with a handy dropper. It also happens to be USDA certified organic, which is wonderful!

We noticed that the label says “Not Tested On Animals,” but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is cruelty-free. There is a difference (go look it up online!), but since it doesn’t have the official bunny logo, we can’t consider it cruelty-free.

As an oil, it is still excellent, and they give you a generous 4 ounces of it. The brand may not be as popular as doTERRA or NOW Foods, but we felt that it deserved honorable mention in our top three!
