So, Can I Use Any Other Types of Oil?
Yes, you can.
In addition to coconut oil, some also find olive oil and sesame oil to be equally as effective.
The key to choosing a good oil for pulling is understanding what to look for on the label, so here are a few terms that you want to see as you compare.
- Unrefined. You want any oil that you use to be in the purest form possible. Did our ancient ancestors have refining systems that bleached and deodorized coconut oil? No!
The refining process is quite harsh on coconut oil and strips it of some beneficial properties. If you see “refined” on the label, don’t purchase it.
Look for other terms such as “raw” and “unfiltered,” as well, since they are all terms that let you know that the oil is pure.
- Virgin. Virgin oil is another term for unrefined oil, so if you see it on the label, you have a green light to purchase it.
Extra virgin coconut oil, on the other hand, really doesn’t mean anything. Why? Because there are no regulations that classify the purity of coconut oil.
Olive oil, on the other hand, is classified as virgin or extra virgin. If we had to suggest one over the other, we would say, “Go for the extra virgin!” since it is purer.
- Cold Pressed. Cold pressed oils are also more natural, thus making them more effective when you swish them around in your mouth.
When manufacturers use heat to extract more oil from seeds and nuts, the heat compromises their nutritional value.
If they simply extract the oil by crushing up the nuts and then using a press to separate the oil without using heat, the result is a cold pressed oil.
Top 3 Best Oil for Oil Pulling Reviews
There’s no doubt that coconut oil is the best oil for pulling, and there are plenty of reasons to love Nutiva.
The 15-ounce size is one of their smallest, but if you use coconut oil regularly for making homemade skin care products, for baking and cooking, on the hair and as a daily oil swish, you will be glad to know that it comes in larger sizes, as well.
They package their coconut oil in a BPA-free jar and out of all the coconut oils we have tried, this has to be one of our favorites in terms of quality and price.
If you can’t stand the flavor of coconut oil or simply prefer to try a different kind of oil, then try olive oil.
We like this fancy one from Greece since it is cold pressed and Non-GMO, and might we add that the flavor is amazing if you use it for cooking.
Some of you probably won’t want to spend so much money on a bottle of oil that gets used as a swish, but if you want good results, then it is worth it to splurge.
There are less expensive olive oils out there, this we know, but many of them are refined and have been stripped of their beneficial natural properties. It would be like choosing to swish with water, which basically only rinses the mouth but doesn’t work to cleanse it.
Banyan has one of the best oils for pulling in the sesame family. Their little bottle of unrefined organic oil has been bottled up with medicinal purposes in mind, and some of the uses they suggest if for include massage oil, has a skin and hair moisturizer, and for oil pulling.
They recommend swishing for a few minutes a day to help promote good oral health and fresh breath, but based on our personal experience and all of the info we have read out there about oil pulling, 20 minutes is really the sweet spot.
It’s difficult for many to make it to the 20-minute mark daily, so if you can’t stand having oil in your mouth for that long, a few minutes a day is better than resorting to commercialized mouthwash.
